Oxfordshire Individual Apparatus 2008

14 gymnasts from the Bicester & district Gymnastics Club travelled down to Phoenix Gymnastic Club, Maidenhead, Berkshire on October 19th 2008 to compete in the county Individual Apparatus Championships.

The 4 youngest gymnasts competing at Level 5 started the day by setting the standard for the older girls. Abbi Durrant, aged 8 and the only gymnast from Bicester competing at Level 5 In Age, performed very well earning Bronze medals on both A-Bars and Beam. Competing in the Level 5 out of age was Katie Harris (10) who after scoring only 6.10 on Beam at the county full apparatus championships back in May and months of hard practice, scored an impressive 11.20 earning her the Silver medal. Also competing at Level 5 Out of Age were Tabitha Saltzer (11) and Savannah Dodds (11). This was Savannah's debut at county level competitions and she had a good day winning Gold on Floor and Bronze on Vault. Tabitha scoring just 0.1 behind Savannah on floor with 11.75 won Silver.

Bicester had 5 gymnasts competing at Level 4. Lifting her scores from the full app earlier this year, scoring an impressive 11.95 on both Beam and Floor, Amy Deller won Gold on Beam and Silver on Floor. Also bringing home two medals was Chloe Banks winning Silver on Beam and Bronze on Floor. Chloe was also awarded a trophy for the Beam score with the least amount of execution deductions. A Silver medal was won by Annabelle Clifton for her Vault and Jessica Pitts won Bronze on Bars. Just missing out of the medals on Bars by only 0.1 behind the 3rd place was Brodie Logan.

Arriving later in the day were the Level 3 gymnasts Gemma Sole, Samantha Brock, Georgie Long, Harriet Bruce and Daisy Ryan-Pont realising the pressure was on to keep up the winning streak.

They picked up the gauntlet thrown down by their juniors and had an excellent day, bringing home only Silver and Gold medals! Their competition started on bars, with just Daisy and Georgie competing for Bicester. Both performed very well, except Daisy missed out the Mo she has been practicing for the last few months (which she is yet to perform in competition). Georgie finished with a beautiful straight backaway, which she has turned into a half twist in practice, and will hopefully be performing at the next competition.

The next piece for the girls was beam, with only Daisy and Gemma competing for Bicester. They had good warm-ups with both girls sticking all of their moves. Gemma competed first, and despite her nerves she managed to stick the whole routine! (even the front walkover!!) Unfortunately Gemma was unable to put in the back flip she has been working on as she is recovering from a recent back injury. She performed excellently in spite of this. Daisy also performed well, unfortunately she messed up her mount (which Glenn is making her do 20 times a session from now on!) and fell off on her split change. However Daisy continued the routine and ended with a solid round-off tuck-back dismount.

The group then moved onto floor, once again, with only two girls from Bicester competing, Harriet and Sam. Harriet was first to go on floor and performed excellent tumbles, including a straight 1/2 twisting somersault! This was a new routine for Harriet, so she did well remembering it! Sam was next up, and she also had a recently updated routine with excellent choerography! Sam did a beautiful straight back somersault, and gained amazing height on her handspring-front somersault!

The last piece of the day was vault, with Sam, Harriet, Gemma and Georgie competing from Bicester. All the girls did half on - half offs which were all excellent. Georgie and Sam, who came top on vault out of the Bicester girls (and 1st and 2nd overall on Vault) did very well, and deserved their high scores. Gemma and Harriet also performed very well. Also worth mentioning is that Georgie won a trophy for having the fewest deductions on her vault out of all of the gymnasts competing on the day, which we are all very pleased about!

The competition was fun for all the girls who took part, and we know all of them thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and are pleased with their medals. All the coaches are very proud of their achievements.
